SOCIAL MEDIA and Google Glass

Nowadays, social media is ubiquitous! As its applications multiply (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) so do the methods for accessing them. The introduction of Google Glass creates an entirely new forum for accessing and updating social media.

HOW Does it Work?

One of the great advantages of using Google Glass for accessing social media is through Google Hangout. Google Hangout is a free video conferencing tool that allows you to hold video chats with people from all around the world. It allows for multiple users to join a single conversation and has a component for written chat messages.

Google Glass is also compatible with other social networking applications, such as Facebook and Twitter. Its wearability allows you and your students to quickly upload messages, pictures and videos to your class accounts. For example, while on a class field trip, you can snap a quick picture to share with students and parents. Additionally, if you have a permission form that needs to be signed, you can quickly upload it to your class network and share it with parents.

USES in the Classroom:

  • Using online chat services, students can offer each other remote tutoring when they are not physically in class.

  • Group work can be challenging, but using online chat tools allows students to safely meet outside of class and to discuss various projects.

  • Students and educators can quickly share files, pictures and videos with each other on their class’ social network. They can send each other messages and feedback quickly, or even share video recordings explaining a concept.

  • Create assignments that use Google Glass, such as a scavenger hunt, and have students upload their work to a social media website.

  • Students can use the video chat function to interact with other students located all over the world, creating a new brand of pen pals!

  • Teachers can invite guest speakers to join their classes “live” through Google Hangout. They can use your Google Glass to project the live-stream on an overhead projector, or invite students to join the hangout.

  • Finally, they can use the video chat function to connect their class with another class from a different school.
